[plant morphology] konjac

Perennial herb, 0.5-2 m high, underground tuber oblate, huge. Petiole stout, cylindrical, light green, with purple spots; palmate compound leaves, leaflets pinnately divided, axis with irregular wings; lobules lanceolate, 4-8 cm long, apex pointed, base cuneate, veins reticulate. The spathe is large, broadly ovate, tubular in lower part, dark purple, greenish, about 30 cm long. The inflorescence of fleshy panicle is cylindrical, yellowish white, usually protruding out of the Buddhas' bract, with most small red purple female flowers at the lower part and most small brown male flowers at the upper part, with large dark purple appendages, expanding into a rod shape, higher than the bract; the ovary is spherical, and the style is short. The berries are globose or oblate, yellow and red at maturity. It blooms in summer.

It grows under the sparse forest, at the edge of the forest, by the stream, or in the garden. It is distributed from southeast to southwest of China.

The plant of the same genus is also used for medicine.
