[plant morphology] Berberis lushanensis
Deciduous shrub, about 1-3.5 m high. The stem is much branched, the branch has furrow grain, and has acupuncture, the thorn usually does not bifurcate, occasionally is three bifurcated, 1 ~ 2.5 cm long. The leaves are clustered, oblanceolate to spatulate, the base of which is narrower and petiolate, about 4-8 cm in length and 1.2-2.6 cm in width. Inflorescence slightly racemose, or subumbelliform, axillary; bracteoles lanceolate; sepals 6, two whorls, inner whorls 3 larger; petals 6, elliptic obovate, about 2-3 mm long, slightly narrower than sepals, with two nectaries in the inner tomb; stamens 6, opposite petals, anthers bifid; ovary superior, style not obvious, stigma flat and large, ovule 1, erect. Berry oblong, 9 mm long, red, slightly powdery, without persistent style.
It grows under the forest and beside the ditch. Distributed in Guangxi, Jiangxi, Jiangsu, Zhejiang and other places.
[collection] in spring and autumn, dig the whole plant, cut off the branches, leaves and fine roots, or cut off part of the cork, and dry it in the sun.
[medicinal material] the dried stem is cylindrical, with grayish brown surface, grooves and a few small lenticels. There are many branches in the upper part, about 3-5 mm in diameter, gray brown to dark brown, with obvious longitudinal ribs on the surface; there are many needles, single or 2-3 branches. The main root is cylindrical, with a diameter of 4-5 cm or more; the head of the root has stem base and bud; the lateral root and branch root are twisted; the surface is yellowish to grayish brown, and the cork is easy to flake off, exposing the brownish yellow skin. The texture of stem, branch and root is hard, the cross section is strong fibrous, and it is bright yellow. There is pith in the center of stem and branch; the root has no pith, and the xylem accounts for the majority. Strong yellow fluorescence can be seen under fluorescent lamp. It tastes bitter.
