Perennial herbs, 40-70 cm high. Stem erect, smooth, base of internodes slightly expanded. Leaves opposite, ovate lanceolate, 6-8 cm long, 2.5-4 cm wide, apex acuminate or acuminate, base suborbicular, margin denticulate; petiole 2-3.5 cm long. Raceme terminal and axillary; flowers pedicel; calyx tube oval, lobes 2, lanceolate, purplish red; petals white, 2, obovate, apex 2-lobed, shorter than calyx; stamens 2, outstretched; ovary inferior, 2-locular, style thin, outstretched, stigma capitate. The fruit is nutlike, obovate, globose, with 4 longitudinal furrows, covered with hook like hairs; the peduncle is 1.5-2 times longer than the fruit, usually drooping. The flowering period is from June to July.
