Deciduous or semi evergreen twining vines, up to 3 m high. Branches gray, striated, lenticel protuberant. Palmate compound leaves, usually 3-5 leaves clustered at the end of branches, or alternate; petiole slender; 5 leaflets, leathery, elliptic, 3-6 cm long, 1.5-2.6 cm wide, apex round and slightly concave, with a thin short tip, base broadly cuneate or circular, entire, slightly pink below. Flowers monoecious, raceme axillary, about 10 cm long; flowers purple; female flowers 1-2 in the lower part of inflorescence, bracts linear lanceolate, perianth 3, wide elliptic, obtuse, staminode 6, pistil 6, cylindric, ovary 1-locular, stigma capitate; male flowers densely in the upper part of inflorescence, smaller, bracteoles, perianth 3, stamen 6, filament flat, anther 2-locular, pistil 3 or 4. Cyanine Podlike berry, long tubular, rounded at both ends, 8 cm long and 3 cm wide, purple when heated, dehiscent along abdominal suture. Seeds black, many, ovate oblong, slightly flat, glossy. The flowering period is from April to June. The fruit is hot in August.
It grows in mountains and forests. It is distributed in Henan, Shandong, Anhui, Jiangsu, Guangdong, Jiangxi, Hunan, Hubei, Sichuan, Shaanxi and other places.
② Akebia trifoliata
Both liana and deciduous are hairless. Leaflets ovate, broadly ovate or long ovate, apex obtuse, slightly concave or acuminate, base rounded or broadly cuneate, sometimes slightly heart-shaped, margin lobed or undulate, lateral veins usually 5-6 pairs; petiole thin, 6-8 cm long. Inflorescence racemose, axillary, ca. 8 cm long; flowers unisexual; male flowers in upper part, stamens 6; female perianth purplish red, with 6 staminodes, carpels separated, 3-12. The fruit is succulent, long ovate and dehiscent along the abdominal suture after ripening; the seeds are mostly ovate and black.
On hillsides, thickets or furrows. Distributed in Hebei, Shanxi, Shandong, Henan, Shaanxi, Gansu, Zhejiang, Anhui, Hubei and other places.
