Shrubs or small trees, 1-5m high. The branches of current year are reddish brown and densely hairy. Single leaf alternate; papery; ovate lanceolate to oblong elliptic, 4-7 cm long, 2-3 cm wide, apex acuminate or tail pointed, base rounded or broadly cuneate, both sides densely covered with short coarse hairs, veins 3, margin serrate; petiole 3-9 mm long, hairy. Flowers unisexual; cymes often paired axillary; pedicels and perianth segments hairy; perianth 5-lobed; male flowers with stamens 4-5, filaments short; female ovary superior, sessile, style 1, stigma 2-forked. Drupe ovoid, or subglobose, orange red, ca. 3 mm, glabrous. The flowering period is from April to May. The fruit period is from August to September.
It grows on sunny hillside, dry valley, open field or shrub. It is distributed in Hubei, Sichuan, Guizhou, Hunan, Guangdong, Jiangxi, Zhejiang and Fujian.
The roots and leaves of Dioscorea angustifolia are also used for medicine in Guangxi.
