[plant morphology] perennial Polygonum herb. The stem is angular, reddish brown, with barbs. Leaves alternate, shield shaped; leaf blade subtriangular, 4-6cm long, 5-8cm wide, apex pointed, base subcordate or truncate, sparsely uncinate along veins below; Stipule nearly round, clasping stem; petiole long, sparsely uncinate. Inflorescence short spicate; bracts round; perianth 5-lobed, reddish or white, enlarged when bearing, fleshy, dark blue; stamens 8; style 3-lobed. Achenes globose, enclosed in a blue, juicy perianth. The flowering period is from June to August and the fruiting period is from September to October.
