Deciduous trees, up to 10 meters high. Bark dark gray, deeply furrowed; young branches gray brown, densely hairy or sparsely pilose, with thick long spines. Leaves alternate, elliptic or elliptic oblong, 2-5.5 cm long and 1-3 cm wide, apex obtuse, base rounded or broadly cuneate, margin coarsely serrate, upper green, sparsely exfoliative pilose, glabrescent, with black dent, lower yellow green. The petiole is 1-4 mm long and densely covered with short hairs. 1-4 flowers clustered in the lower part of branchlets or leaf axils; calyx 4-5-lobed; stamen 4; pistil askew; style 2-lobed. Nut flat, 5-6 mm long, with crooked wings, apex 2-lobed, calyx persistent, flowering from April to May. The fruit period is from July to September.
Born in foothills, roadsides, near villages. Distributed in Jilin, Liaoning, Inner Mongolia, Hebei, Shanxi, Henan, Anhui, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Jiangxi, Hunan and other places.
