Evergreen trees, up to 10-20 meters high (in Jiangsu and Zhejiang provinces, the weather is cold, often shrubby, only 1-2 meters high); gray bark, white pubescence on young branches and buds. The leaves are thin and leathery. Alternate, ovate elliptic or oblong, 10-25 cm long, 4-9 cm wide, both ends gradually narrowed, glabrous on both sides or sparsely hairy below, veinlets reticulate; petiole 1.5-2 cm long, with short stipule marks, about 1 / 3 or 1 / 4 of the total length of petiole. Flowers white, single, axillary, very fragrant, 3-4 cm long; sepals oblong; petals linear, 3.2 cm long; stamens numerous, multiseriate, filaments flat; carpels numerous, ovules more than 2 in each carpel, spirally arranged on the elongated stipe, ovary hairy, stigma capitate. Fruit subglobose, composed of many split carpels, mostly not fruity. The flowering period is July.
Born on the roadside or in the garden. It is cultivated in Fujian, Guangdong, Guangxi, Yunnan, Sichuan, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Anhui and Jiangxi.
