Jiayu County, formerly known as shayangbao, is a county under the jurisdiction of Xianning City, Hubei Province. It is located at 113 ° 39 ′ - 114 ° 22 ′ E and 29 ° 48 ′ - 30 ° 19 ′ n. It is located on the South Bank of the middle reaches of the Yangtze River, bordering Wuhan in the north, Chibi City in the south, 40 km from Xianning City in the East and Honghu City across the river in the West part.
Jiayu county has a long and narrow terrain, 85 km long and 5.7-17.9 km wide, with a total area of 1017 square kilometers in 2016, including 712 square kilometers of land area and 305 square kilometers of water area; it governs 8 towns with a total population of 366577 (in 2018).
Jiayu county is one of the first batch of areas open to the outside world and an important development zone of the Yangtze River economic belt. It is a famous town of vegetables, crabs, fish and gold in Hubei Province. It has won the title of "model county of greening in Hubei Province".
Evolution of organizational system
Jiayu was formerly known as Shayang fort. In the first year of Taikang in the Western Jin Dynasty (280), Shayang County was established, belonging to Wuchang county.
In the first year of Jianyuan (478) of the Southern Dynasty, the counties of the province entered Jiangxia county. In the first year of Chen Yongding (557) of the Southern Dynasty, they were restored to Shangjun county.
Sui kaihuang nine years (589) merged into Puqi County, Shayang County to set niandu town.
In the first year of Shengyuan (937) of the Southern Tang Dynasty, the town was changed into a town (city), and in the eleventh year of Baoda (953), the town was upgraded to Jiayu county. It was named after the meaning of "book of songs · Xiaoya · Jiayu in the South". It belongs to Ezhou, Wuchang road in the Yuan Dynasty, and Wuchang Prefecture in the Ming and Qing Dynasties.
In 1913, it belonged to Jianghan Dao; in 1916, it belonged to the province; in 1932, it belonged to the first administrative supervision district.
In 1949, it belonged to Mianyang special area. In 1951, it belonged to Daye district. In 1952, it belonged to Xiaogan special area. In 1959, it belonged to Wuhan city. It was incorporated into Wuchang County in 1960. In 1961, it was restored to Xiaogan. After 1965, it belonged to Xianning district and region, and in 1998 it belonged to prefecture level Xianning City.
In 1996, Jiayu County covered an area of 1017 square kilometers with a population of about 338000. It has jurisdiction over 10 towns and 5 townships: Yuyue Town, Panjiawan Town, DuPu Town, gaotieling Town, Guanqiao Town, laoguanzui Town, Luxi Town, Jizhou Town, Shuqiao Town, Xinjie Town, Badou Township, Hezhen Township, Hushan Township, Yandun Township and Zhusha township. The county government is located in Yuyue town.
According to the fifth census in 2000, the total population of Jiayu county is 358646, including 18257 in Luxi Town, 18855 in gaotieling Town, 13965 in Shuqiao Town, 11921 in Guanqiao Town, 94297 in Yuyue Town, 26919 in Xinjie Town, 36277 in Panjiawan Town, 16423 in DuPu Town, 19792 in laoguanzui Town, 55533 in Paizhouwan Town, 8026 in Hushan Town, 13093 in Badou town and 16423 in Zhuzhou town There are 11176 people in Sha Township and 14112 people in Yandun township.

Jiayu county is located at the junction of Mufu mountain range and Jianghan Plain. It can be divided into three landforms: the Yangtze River alluvial plain, the southwest Longgang plain and the cutting remnant hill, which roughly forms the landform pattern of "one mountain, three rivers, four fields, two roads and manors". The terrain inclines from southeast to northwest, with the lowest elevation of 18 meters and the highest elevation of 243 meters, most of which are between 19 and 50 meters.

Jiayu county has a subtropical humid monsoon climate. It has four distinct seasons, mild climate, high humidity, sufficient sunshine, rainy and hot season, long frost free period and other characteristics. There is no obvious difference between plain and hilly climate.
The annual average temperature of the whole county is 17.0 ℃. The coldest month is January with an average temperature of 4.5 ℃ and the extreme minimum temperature of - 12 ℃; the hottest month is July with an average temperature of 29.2 ℃ and the extreme maximum temperature of 40.2 ℃. The frost free period starts from March 13-16 and ends from November 16-28, with 249-262 frost free days. Due to the barrier of Mufu mountains, the cold and warm air flow converges in the Yangtze River Basin in winter and spring. The temperature drops slowly in winter and returns quickly in early spring. The average initial date of agricultural boundary temperature (stable through the duration of 5 ℃) is February 27 and the final date is December 10, which has some climatic characteristics different from those in the South and the north.

The soil in Jiayu county can be divided into red soil, calcareous soil, fluvo aquic soil, paddy soil and meadow soil. Red soil (brown red soil) is distributed in the southeast of the county, mainly in Guanqiao, Yandun and other places. The soil is acidic, which is the main dry land soil of the county. Limestone soil is distributed in the southwest part of the county, mainly concentrated in gaotieling Town, Luxi town and Guanqiao town. Part of the plain in the north, middle and southwest of the county is fluvo aquic soil, which is the main dryland soil with the largest area and widest distribution in the county. Paddy soil is distributed in all rice planting areas of the county, which is formed by long-term water tillage. Meadow soil is distributed in the beach of the Yangtze River.

The main mineral deposits in Jiayu county are gold, coal, manganese, silica refractory sand and limestone. The first phase of SHEWUSHAN gold deposit has proved 20 tons of gold reserves. It is the first large red clay type gold deposit in China and the second in the world.

In the whole year, 4936 people were born, with a birth rate of 13.47 ‰; 1356 people died, with a mortality rate of 3.70 ‰; the annual net population increased by 3580 people, with a natural growth rate of 9.77 ‰, 1.96 thousand points higher than that of the previous year.
