Historical evolution
According to the local chronicles, Changyuan is located at No. 22, Miaotang lane, Yuyu lane. The residential area is 4.14 mu, including 2.12 mu of garden. According to legend, this garden was built by Daotai Wang in Qing Dynasty. At the end of the Qing Dynasty and the beginning of the Republic of China, Wang's surname declined, and teahouses were once opened in the garden. In about 7 years of the Republic of China, it was purchased and renovated by lawyer pan Xing. In 25 years, Tong Yi's "Jiangnan garden annals" said: "there are still small gardens in the city, with Changyuan and Huyuan as the most important ones." Later, it was said that the surname pan went to Shanghai. In the early days of liberation, the garden was rented out and taken care of by Zhang and Fang.
In 1956, Xilang housing was a public-private partnership. At the time of investigation in 1958, the garden was still intact. Liu Dunzhen praised it as "rich and multi-level landscape, one of the representative gardens in Suzhou." In 1959, it was taken over by the Municipal Department of landscape architecture, where Qin Xindong followed Fang's family name to live and take care of the garden.
During the "Cultural Revolution", the destruction was serious. The rockery was destroyed, some pools were filled, the Huangshi revetment collapsed into the pool, the northeast corner of the park was occupied, the four side hall, five pavilions and curved corridors were demolished, only the base site and pool curved bridge were left, precious flowers and trees were cut down, and the remaining buildings were moved into seven households. Now it's under repair.
