Ancient buildings in Yangliu Village
Yangliucun ancient buildings, located in yangliucun, Hushu street, Jiangning District, Nanjing City, is one of the largest existing residential remains of Ming and Qing Dynasties in Nanjing. It is also a typical ancient residential building in Jiangnan area. With typical Nanjing regional characteristics, it has been listed as a national key cultural relics protection unit.
Yangliucun ancient building complex was built in Ming Dynasty, and was rebuilt successively in Kangxi and Qianlong years of Qing Dynasty. More than 400 years ago, a branch of Zhu family settled in Yangliu Village (then known as Yangliu Village) and gradually became a big family. Nearly half of the buildings in the village were built by Zhu family.
The ancient building complex faces south, with its back on Machang mountain and front on Yangliu lake. There are 36 original residential buildings, 17 of which are relatively complete today, with a total of 36 entrances and 366 houses, covering an area of 1.12 hectares. All the buildings are high wall deep courtyard with multi entrance hall style, among which the largest wing hall has 7 entrances and 18 thresholds. The houses and courtyards are connected with each other, and the roads are paved with bluestones.

Yangliu village is located in the outer Qinhuai River Plain, with 1348 residents. The village is close to mountains and rivers, Machang mountain in the north and Yangliu Lake in front, which is rich in the characteristics of Jiangnan Water Town. Yangliu village was built in the seventh year of Wanli in the Ming Dynasty (1579). The village has its own independent houses, also known as "Tang". The names of each hall are: Yisheng hall, Yijing hall, Siben hall, Shude hall, Sicheng hall, Lihe hall, Juya hall, Anya hall, Chonghou hall, Xule hall, Juyi hall, Tianle hall, Yingxue hall, Zuyao hall and Wenguang hall. The original alleys between the houses were all paved with bluestone slabs and stone steps. In ancient times, there was a saying that "the stone gatehouse is plastered with green stone, and the willows are not stained with mud". It is a clean "green stone street".
Scale layout
The ancient buildings in Yangliu village were built during the reign of Emperor Kangxi and Emperor Qianlong of Qing Dynasty. There are 36 original houses, and 17 existing houses are relatively complete, with a total of 37 houses and 366 rooms, with a construction area of 11160 square meters. The door carvings of these ancient buildings are generally well preserved. Among them, the inscriptions of the 13 better gatehouses are "xuanma Yigui", "Zundao calmly", "Leibu ningsi", "Xingren Lvyi" and so on. All of them are regular script brick carvings, and are decorated with figures, flowers and other patterns. The carvings are meticulous and the patterns are exquisite. They are rich in the architectural style of Ming and Qing Dynasties, showing the high talent of the ancient working people.
The ancient buildings in Yangliu village are all high wall deep courtyard with many entrances facing south. Generally, there are three entrances, four entrances and five entrances. The most popular "Yishengtang" is seven entrances, with 18 thresholds. The foyer, sedan hall and main housing are built on the central axis. On the left and right longitudinal axis, there are guest rooms, study rooms, secondary houses and kitchen rooms. The latter part of the houses are mostly two-story buildings, which are connected with each other. According to different needs, the interior of the hall is separated freely by partition fans, screens, etc. In addition to the use of upper ceiling "Wang brick", but also made into a variety of "Xuan", exquisite and beautiful.
The ancient buildings in Yangliu village are simple, elegant and unique. They are typical ancient residential buildings in Jiangnan area, with typical Nanjing regional characteristics. They also have brick, wood and stone carvings, but they are not as conspicuous as Hui style buildings, which are more introverted and scholarly. The tile surface of the roof is more atmospheric, The arc is very strong; the contents of the sculpture include the romance of the west chamber and the ancient city meeting, as well as the Eight Immortals in darkness, the head of the elephant represents good luck, the Phoenix symbolizes danfengchaoyang, and it is prosperous. There is a pen ingot on the gate, which means that it will rise.
Zhu's courtyard
Yangliu village in Jiangning District is a well-developed residential complex of Ming and Qing Dynasties. It is called "Zhu's courtyard" by Nanjing as "small ninety-nine and a half rooms". It is a group of ancient buildings built in Ming Dynasty and rebuilt successively during the reign of Emperor Kangxi and Emperor Qianlong of Qing Dynasty.
It is said that this "little ninety-nine and a half" was built by Zhu Houshan, the 11th generation grandson of the founding emperor of the Ming Dynasty, and later generations. At that time, Zhu Houshan was a well-known millionaire in Jinling. He owned 18 pawnshops, 18 banks, and countless money and fields in the city. Zhu Houshan has three sons. At first, Zhu Houshan built the "Zhu's courtyard" for his son. Later, the descendants of Zhu's family flourished, and the more houses they built, the more the whole Yangliu village became the "Zhu's courtyard".
There are 17 relatively complete houses in Zhu's courtyard, all of which are high wall courtyard with many entrances facing south, generally 3-5 entrances. The most popular "Yisheng hall" is seven entrances, 18 thresholds, and nearly 100 meters in front and back. On the central axis, there are hall, car hall and main housing; on the left and right, there are guest rooms, study rooms, secondary housing and kitchen house, and the rear housing is mostly two-story buildings. The buildings are connected like a labyrinth for outsiders. Carved beams and painted buildings in the ancient house are exquisitely designed. Each gatehouse has a title and each courtyard has a hall name. The scale and pattern of the houses and courtyards preserve the traditional style of the vernacular houses in the south of the Yangtze River.
Renovation works
The renovation project of the Ming and Qing Dynasty ancient building complex in Yangliu village, Jiangning District, Nanjing city started. The ancient building complex covers an area of more than 4400 square meters and has a history of more than 200 years. The estimated cost of the project is 8.975 million yuan. Zhou Xueying, associate professor of the school of history of Nanjing University, who presided over the maintenance design scheme, told reporters that the renovation project will protect the original architectural layout, structure, technology and materials, and protect historical relics information as much as possible. The first phase of the project is to repair the existing houses, and the second phase is to rebuild a row of buildings that have been demolished. The whole repair process includes removing and repairing the roof to prevent rain, picking up leaks, removing and replacing decayed wood members, restoring the beam and column frame, re decorating the wood frame, preventing termites, re laying and adjusting the water pipe, etc.
On November 27, 2011, the renovation of Yangliu village ancient building complex in Jiangning was completed and opened to the outside world.
