The houses in Yuhu village are different from the Naxi houses in other places. They are built of stone and of civil structure. Locke's former residence can not be ignored. Locke, an Austrian American scholar, entered Yunnan as an explorer, writer and photographer of global geographic magazine. He lived in Lijiang from 1921 to 1949. He used to be a botanist collecting plant specimens, but later became an anthropologist absorbed in Dongba culture. He was the first western scholar who introduced the history and culture of Naxi people to the world, especially the study of Dongba hieroglyphics. Therefore, he got the title of "father of Naxi studies". He has lived in Yuhu village since he was in Lijiang. Locke's old house, which has been restored, is a courtyard with three rooms. The building facing west and East is the former residence of the National Geographic Society's China Yunnan expedition headquarters. The upstairs is Locke's living room. The beds, tables, chairs, carpets, braziers, bookshelves, alarm clocks, lanterns and other utensils are Locke's relics. The building facing south and north is Locke's old residence exhibition hall, which displays a large number of historical photos taken by Locke in that year, as well as Locke's works Among the relics left in Lijiang, woolen overcoats, hunting guns, dental equipment, carpenter's tools, aluminum rivets and ox hide cases were all brought by Locke. Climate: because Xuesong village is at the foot of Yulong Snow Mountain, the temperature is 6-7 degrees lower than the bottom of the county, which is relatively cold and more suitable for summer travel.
Locke's former residence
More than ten miles northbound from Lijiang ancient city, you will arrive at Xuesong natural village, Yuhu administrative village, at the south foot of Yulong Snow Mountain. The Naxi language of this village is wuluken, which means the village at the foot of snow mountain.
In 1922, Joseph Locke (1884-1962), an Austrian American, entered Yunnan, China from the Thai Burmese border as an explorer, writer and photographer of National Geographic magazine. Then he traveled from Simao in southern Yunnan to Lijiang in Northwest Yunnan, and lived under Yulong mountain for 27 years. Most of the time, he lived in Xuesong village in Yuhu.
He wrote: "wuluken, a small village with beautiful environment, is located on the hillside of the pure Lijiang snow mountain. The main peak of the snow mountain is steep with a fan, which protects it like a God. The headquarters of the National Geographic Society's Yunnan expedition is located here.
The story of Locke
Taking Xuesong village of Yuhu as the base camp, Locke collected tens of thousands of plant specimens and seeds in Northwest Yunnan, took thousands of precious photos of plants and folk customs, translated hundreds of Dongba scriptures, and described the ancient kingdom of Nashi in Southwest China and the complete book of 100 subjects in Naxi English, thus turning himself from a botanist to an anthropologist. In July 1949, after Locke left Lijiang, he always hoped to visit Lijiang again. In 1962, when he fell ill in Hawaii, he repeatedly said: instead of lying in the hospital bed in Hawaii, how I want to die in the snow and flowers of Yulong mountain.
Scenery
The old house of Locke in Xuesong village of Yuhu has been restored and opened to visitors as "exhibition hall of Locke's old house". Locke's former residence has three rooms in a courtyard. The building facing east from the west is exactly the former residence of the Chinese Yunnan expedition headquarters of the National Geographic Society of the United States. The living room on the upper floor where Locke lived for more than 20 years is Locke's relics. The building facing north and south, downstairs, is "Locke's old house exhibition hall", which displays a large number of historical photos taken by Locke at that time, as well as a number of relics left by Locke in Lijiang. Among them, woolen overcoats, hunting guns, dental appliances, craftsman's tools, aluminum leather cases, nailed cattle trunks, etc. are all items Locke brought from western society at that time. Locke is the first foreign scholar who introduced Lijiang national culture to the western world.
On the cliff about 30 meters high to the west of Xuesong village in Yuhu, there are four characters in regular script: "jade pillar holds the sky". This is the title of Yang long, the first official magistrate in Lijiang during the Yongzheng period of the Qing Dynasty. This stone carving not only describes the magnificence of Lijiang snow mountain, but also becomes a cultural relic directly related to the important historical event of "changing the land to flow". At the foot of the cliff, there is a clear spring like jade, which is called Jade Lake. "The reflection of Yuhu Lake" is the first of the twelve scenic spots in Yulong Snow Mountain, which was praised by Naxi poets in Ming and Qing Dynasties.
