Shanghai Mint Museum
The Shanghai Mint Museum is located in the office building of Shanghai Mint Co., Ltd. (formerly known as Shanghai Mint) which is the "excellent historical building in Shanghai" on the Bank of Suzhou River, covering an area of about 600 square meters. Among the many coin museums in China, the Shanghai Mint Museum is unique with the theme of "coin making technology". There are three exhibition halls in the museum, namely "modern Mint Technology Hall", "contemporary Mint hall" and "exhibition hall of Mr. Baoke's donated collections", which display a large number of archives treasures, such as coin products, molds, equipment, mint technology and process, which are representative of each period in the past 90 years.
Collection
Shanghai Mint Museum is a good place to learn about modern Mint technology and coins. The exhibition hall covers an area of about 600 square meters, including information projection hall, mint technology hall and contemporary Mint hall.
Located on the west side of the museum, the mint hall mainly displays the equipment and process of modern Mint technology, so as to witness the development of China's Mint industry and the leap of the times over the past hundred years, and let you review the history and look forward to the future.
The mechanized coinage in modern China began in the 1880s, when Zhang Zhidong, governor of Guangdong and Guangdong provinces, founded the Guangdong money Bureau. In 1889, the "Longyang" coin was coined. Subsequently, various provinces set up imitation bureaus, and more than 20 mints were set up nationwide. The Shanghai Mint, which started construction in 1920 and put into operation in 1933, unified the national coinage.
Located in the east side of the museum, the contemporary Mint hall displays the representative coin products produced in various periods of new China, including: currency coins, gold and silver commemorative coins, ordinary commemorative coins, commemorative medals, award-winning products and contemporary Mint technology, so that you can understand the general situation of contemporary coin making and see their elegant demeanor at the same time.
Among the exhibits are original drawings, oil and clay relief, plaster, hand carving worktable, mold making tools and commemorative coins, commemorative medal molds and hand carving tools made by craft artists. The video also shows the most advanced mold making technology of modern mint. In the process of visiting, the audience can watch the miniature pattern on the coin through the stereo microscope, and use the new coin recognition instrument to identify the authenticity of the coin.
Venue features
Modern Mint Technology Hall
The modern Mint hall is arranged on the west side of the museum, which is in sharp contrast with the contemporary production technology on the east side. It shows the equipment and process of modern coinage and witnesses the rapid development of China's coinage in the past century.
Mr. Clifford Hewitt: when the Shanghai Mint was founded in 1920, he applied to the US government and, with the approval of US President Harding, hired Mr. Clifford Hewitt as the chief technician to take charge of the technical work of the Shanghai Mint.
Factory model and short film: introduce the historical changes of the company before and after liberation, including the layout and structure of the factory, scale and production capacity, types and uses of buildings, so as to uncover the mystery of the Mint Company.
Production equipment display: it truly reproduces the technological process of machine-made coins. Silver door, batching, melting and casting, tablet grinding machine, punch, trimming machine, embossing machine, inspection package, and even mold carving, turnover Visitors are immersed in the whole Mint production scene to gain Mint knowledge.
Physical display: silver, copper, aluminum, nickel and white copper coins produced by the Central Mint during the period of the national government since 1933 are displayed. The gold bar on display is also one of the products of the mint, with one or two, two, five or ten Liang as the main products. The photo shows that the workers were printing numbers on the gold bar at that time.
Mint mold display: the mint mold display is a major feature of the museum, including the original Guangzhou Mint's Zhongyuan mold in the third year of the Republic of China, the Tianjin Mint's 5% face value mold in the fifth year of the Republic of China, and the national government's Central Mint in the 23rd year of the Republic of China, which implemented the "Regulations on the casting of silver standard" and issued the circulation of silver standard coins. Because the gold standard was not approved, only a few samples were printed, and only dozens of silver coins survived. Among the objects on display are the original molds of Sanzhi silver coin carved in Italy in the 18th year of the Republic of China, and the molds of jinyiliang in the 38th year of the Republic of China that were not produced after carving in 1949, especially the molds of silver coin of the 5th year of the Chinese Soviet in the revolutionary base of Northern Shaanxi.
Self made Commemorative Medallion: display the Red Army's hand coining exhibits, imitating the western ancient coining technology. The coin making equipment placed at the exhibition site can be used by visitors to make commemorative medals for commemoration

Contemporary Mint Hall
The contemporary Mint hall, located in the east of the museum, displays the representative coin products produced in various periods after the founding of the people's Republic of China, such as currency coins, gold and silver commemorative coins, ordinary commemorative coins, commemorative medals and award-winning products, so that visitors can understand the general situation of new China's coin making.
Currency: the whole process of molding the national emblem with the front of the coin, the first dime, dime and dime coins issued in New China, the third set of RMB dime, dime, dime and yuan coins, the fourth set and the fifth set of RMB dime, dime and yuan coins. The video in the exhibition hall introduces the process of coining, stamping, inspection and packaging of all coins issued in the past 50 years since the founding of the people's Republic of China. Technology Exhibition of shadow scene synthesis: introduce to the audience the whole process of the production line of nickel plated steel core biscuit with shadow scene synthesis technology. The golden rhinoceros weighing more than 7000 grams is placed in the central display cabinet, which is the treasure of the museum.
Gold and silver commemorative coins: the sub theme shows the gold and silver commemorative coins issued by the people's Bank of China under the authorization of the State Council since 1979. There are gold and silver commemorative coins for the 30th anniversary of the founding of the people's Republic of China, major historical events, outstanding figures, pandas, Chinese zodiac, sports and other ten themes.
Ordinary commemorative coins: the first set of ordinary commemorative coins issued in 1984 for the 35th anniversary of the founding of the people's Republic of China. Among the numerous binding commemorative coins, there are displayed copies of the request for instructions on Issuing commemorative coins for the 35th anniversary of the founding of the people's Republic of China approved by the leaders at all levels of the State Council, the State Economic Commission, the head office of the people's Bank of China, and the Printing Bureau.
Commemorative Medallion: an important part of the metal coin family. It shows the commemorative medallions of different periods, different materials, different themes and different specifications. Since 1979, Shanghai Mint has designed and produced hundreds of commemorative medallions with rich themes, various styles and exquisite production. In particular, the large bronze medallions designed by masters with vivid pictures, strong sense of hierarchy, wide pictures and superb carving techniques are not only the highlights of the exhibits, but also the hot spots of the market.
Award winning products exhibition: in the cylindrical display cabinet of the exhibition hall, there are displayed "four firsts" in the history of China's commemorative coins (namely, the first set of commemorative gold medals "Beijing scenic spots", the first set of commemorative gold coins "30th anniversary of the founding of the people's Republic of China", the first set of panda gold coins "1982" and the first set of ordinary commemorative coins "35th anniversary of the founding of the people's Republic of China") And some of the best gold and silver commemorative coins in the world. Historical review
In 2010, the museum added the exhibition hall of historical review and Mr. Burke's donation to display the coin collection donated by the late famous American coin collector, Howard Franklin Burke. There are two kinds of "gold standard coins" that are famous and rarely exist in the world, rare coins produced by the Central Mint, and a number of warehouses with old maps and photos of the Central Mint in the archives The precious historical materials of China.
