Because it happened to be the 25th anniversary of King George V's accession to the throne, it was also known as the Jubilee pond. Another xiachengmen reservoir was set up to the southeast of Chengmen reservoir. In 1965, the project was completed and water storage began. The total storage capacity of the two reservoirs reached 17.58 million cubic meters.

history
The construction of the reservoir began in 1923. The initial water depth of the reservoir is 200 feet and it can store 900 million gallons of water. The second phase of the project started in 1935. In addition to raising the main dam from 115 feet to 275 feet and building an 82 foot high pineapple Valley auxiliary dam, the Kowloon receiving reservoir and the shilibai water treatment plant were also built. After the completion of the two phases of the project in 1936, the water storage capacity of the whole Shing Mun reservoir reached 3 billion gallons, which was the largest reservoir in Britain at that time. Since it was completed in commemoration of the 25th year of the reign of King George V, the pond was renamed Silver Jubilee pond.
The Shing Mun reservoir is part of the drunken Bay defense line and is one of the relics of Hong Kong's defense.
