Established in 1988, the Hong Kong Institute of biotechnology Limited (hereinafter referred to as "the academy") is a wholly-owned scientific research institution of the Chinese University of Hong Kong. It is located in Tolo Harbour, next to the campus of the Chinese University of Hong Kong in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. It is not more than 200 meters away from the bioinformatics center building of the Hong Kong Science and technology park.
With a donation from the Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities foundation, the Academy of health was established to promote biotechnology based Industrial Development in Hong Kong and Asia. To this end, the Academy of health shoulders an important mission: to assist biotechnology research with application value in the region, and closely link technology transfer and technology commercialization
The government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region has studied earlier and identified biotechnology and traditional Chinese medicine as two important locomotives for the development of Hong Kong's knowledge-based industry in the future. With funding from the innovation and Technology Commission of the SAR government, the Academy of health has been able to acquire more and newer research and production equipment in these two areas in the past few years. At present, the facilities owned by the Academy of health, including ultra clean workshop, bioreactor, fermentation tank, separation and purification system and other instruments for various analysis and production purposes, are all aimed at meeting the certification requirements.

The facilities, production process knowledge and operators of the Academy of health are open to entrepreneurs in the biotechnology industry, so that they can find a scientific research center that provides one-stop service, and turn their biotechnology projects into commercial products or product intermediates for market evaluation. As a non profit making organization, the Academy of health only charges the customers who enjoy the service the cost equivalent. The arrangement of the Academy of health hopes to greatly reduce the amount of investment of entrepreneurs in instruments, equipment, manpower and rent at the initial stage of developing biotechnology business.
