University profile
The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) is a forward-looking and research-oriented university. It was founded on October 17, 1963. According to the proposal of the first Fulton report, the government merged the three liberal arts and science academies - New Asia College, Chung Chi College and United College.
At present, CUHK has four member colleges, including Chung Chi College, New Asia College, United College and Shaw College. In 2006, Chenxing college and shanheng college were established. In 2007, Jingwen college, Wu Yisun college and harmony college were added. Some of the new colleges adopted "all night dining" to further develop the unique advantages of the college system and provide more choices for students.
For many years, the Chinese University has been moving towards a research-oriented comprehensive university. At the beginning of its founding, the University established a research institute and three research institutes, and encouraged teachers to actively engage in academic research, which shows that it attaches great importance to the development and creation of knowledge. In order to meet the needs of social development, the Chinese University continues to introduce new disciplines and new courses. The medical college established in 1977, the Department of architecture and the school of engineering established in 1991, and the law school established in 2005 are all new milestones in the development of the University.
The university has eight schools of literature, business administration, education, engineering, law, medicine, science and Social Sciences, with a total of 61 departments. At present, the Chinese University offers a wide range of courses, many of which were initiated in Hong Kong. There are more than 20000 undergraduate and graduate students.
One of the purposes of the Chinese University was to give the Chinese people in Hong Kong the opportunity to receive higher education and carry forward traditional Chinese culture. However, this does not limit the development of CUHK towards an international university in the future. At the beginning of its founding, the Chinese University advocated "integrating tradition and modernity, and integrating China and the west". It was committed to becoming an international university and a university for Chinese people. It also hoped that students would have a good command of both Chinese and English, understand the traditions of the East and the West, and effectively fulfill the mission of communicating Chinese and Western cultures.
Therefore, since its inception, it has put forward the education policy of "two cultures" and "two languages". This spirit of combining Chinese and Western culture and bilingual has been widely recognized by universities at home and abroad, and has attracted many world-famous scholars to give lectures or teach. At present, there are many internationally renowned scholars among the nearly 1000 faculty members of CUHK, such as the first Chinese Nobel Prize winner, 1957 Nobel Prize winner in physics professor Yang Zhenning, 1996 Nobel Prize winner in economics Sir Morris, fields prize winner Professor Qiu Chengtong, botany authority Professor Hu Xiuying, Sinology master Professor Rao Zongyi and the first Chinese Turing prize winner Professor Yao Qizhi et al. Professor Kao Kun, former president of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, won the 2009 Nobel Prize in physics. Many teachers' achievements in teaching and research have been recognized by the international academic community.
In addition, many professors of CUHK are academicians of Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chinese Academy of engineering. They are professor Mai Songwei, Professor Huang naizheng and Professor Wu Qi in the Department of chemistry, Professor Kong Xiangfu in the Research Center for epidemic prevention and Professor Liu Yunyi in the Department of surgery. Professor Chen Xiaoming, a Ph.D. graduate from the Department of chemistry of Chinese University, is also an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Professor Xin Shiwen in the Department of biology and Professor Xu Yangsheng in the Department of mechanical and automatic engineering are academicians of the Chinese Academy of engineering.
