The predecessor of School of Applied Arts and Sciences of Beijing Union University is the first branch of Peking University (renamed Peking University Branch in 1983) and the second branch of Renmin University of China, which was established in 1978. In 1985, the two branches were respectively incorporated into Beijing Union University and merged in 1994 to establish the School of Applied Arts and Sciences of Beijing Union University. At present, the college has more than 3100 full-time undergraduate and junior college students. It is a multi-disciplinary college that mainly cultivates undergraduates, including postgraduate education, adult education and international student education, including literature, science, engineering, history, economics, law, management and so on.

Our school aims at developing applied subjects and training applied talents. In the past 30 years, according to the actual situation and development trend of the capital economy, science and technology, and culture, we have continuously optimized the structure of disciplines and curriculum system, so as to make graduates have a strong adaptability. There are graduates from our college in all walks of life in the capital, many of whom have grown into the backbone of business and management. The one-time employment rate of graduates of our college has been over 92% for many years, and graduates are widely welcomed by the society.

Our college has a strong faculty. Since the establishment of the University, a number of professors, associate professors and subject leaders have been introduced from Peking University, Renmin University of China and other key universities. All the new young teachers have doctor's or master's degrees, forming a relatively reasonable structure and a high level of teaching and scientific research. At present, there are 227 full-time teachers, 84 with senior professional titles, and more than 60% of the total number of teachers have graduate education, including 47 doctors. There are also a group of experts enjoying special government subsidies, outstanding young and middle-aged backbone teachers, young and middle-aged discipline leaders and top-notch innovative talents in Beijing. In addition, our college also has a high-level team of external teachers from famous universities at home and abroad, who take part-time courses in our college every semester.

Our college has 16 undergraduate majors and 4 Higher Vocational Majors, and has formed a three-level discipline system of city, University and college. At present, our college has three key disciplines of Beijing Municipal Construction: Food Science, economic law and human geography; one Municipal Key Laboratory: Laboratory of bioactive substances and functional food; one national characteristic specialty construction site: resource environment and Prime Minister planning and management; two municipal brand construction specialties: biotechnology, resource environment and Urban-Rural planning and management. Our college also has four key construction disciplines at the school level of Beijing Union University: special history, journalism, environmental science, archival science, and six backbone (construction) majors at the school level: resources and environment and urban and rural planning and management, biotechnology, journalism, history, archival science, and law. In 2006, the food science and special history of our college became the first batch of master's degree awarding disciplines of Beijing Union University.

Our college has always attached great importance to teaching work, with teaching work as the center and teaching quality as the lifeline. While strengthening the construction of disciplines and teaching staff, we have also strictly managed teaching. According to the concept of modern higher education, we have formed a set of scientific teaching management system. The Academic Affairs Office of our college has twice been rated as the advanced academic affairs office of colleges and universities in Beijing. In the first two years of the 10th Five Year Plan and the 11th five year plan, one course was rated as the national excellent course, two courses as the Beijing excellent course, eight teaching materials as the Beijing excellent teaching materials for higher education, and five teaching materials as the national planning teaching materials for the 10th Five Year plan and the 11th five year plan. The college has won a number of teaching achievement awards at or above the school level of Beijing Union University. Our students have won the first and second prizes in the National College Students' mathematical modeling and college students' English competitions over the years, and also won the national gold medal twice in LCCI (London Business English).

The scientific research of our college is at a high level in the municipal colleges. During the Tenth Five Year Plan period, the college has undertaken 377 scientific research projects including the state, ministries and commissions, Beijing Municipality, Beijing Municipal Education Commission and Beijing Union University, won 205 university level and above awards for scientific research achievements, published 313 academic monographs, and published 1343 papers in public. Scientific research funds have increased steadily year by year, and some achievements have been transferred to enterprises. In the early stage of the eleventh five year plan, our college has nine projects in research, including the National Natural Science Foundation of China, the national philosophy and social sciences program, and the humanities and Social Sciences Research of the Ministry of education. The "Beijing Cultural History" research team of our college has been rated as the "academic innovation team" of Beijing Municipal universities. Research institutions such as the laboratory of bioactive substances and functional foods, the Institute of economic law, the Institute of nationalities and religions, the Olympic Culture Research Center, the human settlements research center, and the indoor environment research institute have also had a greater impact at home and abroad.

We have established inter school cooperation with foreign universities such as New Zealand, South Korea, the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia and Switzerland. We have sent teachers and international students to each other and carried out international cooperative education projects in various forms such as "3 + 1" and "3 + 2" to cultivate pioneering and international high-quality talents. Nearly 100 foreign experts have been teaching for teachers, graduate students and senior undergraduates. Our college is also one of the institutions approved by the Ministry of education to recruit foreign students and students from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan. Every year, more than 200 foreign students and students from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan study in our college.

Our college is located in Xueyuan Road, the largest College District in China, with rich educational resources. In 1999, under the organization of Beijing Municipal Education Commission, 16 universities including our college formed a "teaching community". Each school has its own elective courses and minor majors. At the same time, due to the advantages of Humanities and Social Sciences in our college, a large number of foreign students are attracted to our college to take elective courses. Students of our college can have classes with students of key universities and exchange with each other.

Our college attaches great importance to the construction of campus culture. Taking the "May 4th" science and Technology Cultural Festival and the "December 9th" Sports Cultural Festival as the main line every year, by cultivating a strong cultural atmosphere and actively carrying out various kinds of cultural and technological activities, we have effectively improved the students' humanistic quality, team awareness and sense of hard work and entrepreneurship. There are more than 50 student associations. After performing successfully in Hong Kong and the United States, the konghou Jimin orchestra was invited to participate in the competition in the United States in 2007 and won many excellent performances. The new drama club, youth bird dance troupe and men's basketball club also won awards in various competitions. Our college student volunteers and student professional associations are active in Beijing's Olympic Games, communities, districts and counties, and actively carry out practical activities and public welfare activities to serve the society.

In the future, our college will adhere to the school running orientation of "facing the public, serving the capital; application-oriented, striving for first-class", adhere to the scientific outlook on development to guide the overall work of the college, develop applied disciplines, carry out quality education, promote educational innovation, effectively improve the quality of education, and strive to create a new situation of building an application-oriented university.
