The predecessor of Guangzhou Sports Vocational and technical college is Guangzhou sports school founded in 1973 and Guangzhou sports team founded in 1976. It was renamed Guangzhou Weilun sports school in 1996. In March 2004, with the approval of Guangdong Provincial People's government and the record of the Ministry of education, it was upgraded to Guangzhou Sports Vocational and technical college, the first provincial capital city and full-time higher sports vocational college in China held by Guangzhou municipal government. Its main task is to cultivate high-level competitive sports talents who win glory for the country and high-quality technical sports talents who meet the needs of society.

College is located in the northeast of Guangzhou, adjacent to Tianhe university district. At present, with a total construction area of 179000 square meters, it has first-class training venues and facilities in China and Asia, modern teaching buildings, libraries, student apartments, comprehensive restaurants, and other supporting institutions and facilities for scientific research and medical treatment. It is a training base for the national swimming team, the National Fencing team, the national track and field team, and the national martial arts team .
