The predecessor of Wenshan University was the National Southwest Normal School which was moved from Zhaotong to Wenshan in February 1947. In October 1955, with the approval of Yunnan Provincial People's government, Wenshan normal school was established on the basis of the National Southwest Normal School. In the autumn of 1958, Wenshan people's University was opened in Wenshan normal school, with one class for teachers' College and one class for medical college, and then it was closed for some reason. In 1977, with the approval of Yunnan Provincial Department of education, Wenshan Teachers College was set up. In 1984, Wenshan Teachers College was established with the approval of Yunnan Provincial People's government. Mr. Chu Tunan, former vice chairman of the National People's Congress, inscribed the name of Wenshan Teachers College. In 1992, it was renamed Wenshan Teachers College. In April 2009, it was upgraded to a full-time regular college with the approval of the Ministry of education.
Since its establishment, the school has always insisted on running schools in the "old, young, border, mountain, poor and war" areas, and has walked out of a road of arduous development. At present, the school covers an area of 877.25 mu, the school building area of 257600 square meters, the library paper collection of 741700 books, the total fixed assets value of nearly 412 million yuan, the total equipment value of 64.5893 million yuan; there are 593 in-service staff, 338 teachers with master's degree or above, more than 10 teachers have been employed as master's tutors by Yunnan Normal University, Kunming University of science and technology, Yunnan Agricultural University.
