Perennial herbs. Stems stout, fleshy, less than 50 cm high, unbranched. Leaves alternate and close, lanceolate, 15-30 cm long, 2.5-6 cm wide, apex acuminate, base sheath shaped, green above, purple below. Flowers white, axillary, with short stalks, numerous, aggregated, enclosed in bracts; bracts 2, mussel shaped, large and compressed, 3-4 cm long, lavender; sepals 3, oblong lanceolate, separated, petal shaped; petals 3, separated; stamens 6, filaments hairy; ovary sessile, 3-locular. Capsule, dehiscent. It blooms in summer.
