Bare shrubs or trees, up to 7 m in height. Branches weak, often spiny. Leaves leathery, oblong obovate or oblong lanceolate, 5-15 cm long and 3-5 cm wide, apex acuminate, base cuneate, margin obtuse serrate, lateral veins 8-12 pairs, both sides slightly protruding. Raceme very short, 1-2 cm long, axillary, with many flowers, pale yellow, solitary or clustered; sepals 4 (~ 5), ovate or lanceolate, inner surface glabrous; without petals; male flowers with many stamens, disk composed of many glands, located at the periphery of stamens; female flower disk round disk, ovary 1-locular, with 2 membranous placentas, style short, stigma usually 2-lobed. Berries globose, brown when ripe. It blooms in spring.
Born in the wilderness, by the woods, by the way. It is distributed all over the south of the Yangtze River.
