[plant morphology] Thesium chinense
Perennial semi parasitic herbs, 15-30 cm high. The base is much branched, the branch is soft and thin, with ribs. Leaves alternate; linear and pointed, 2-5 cm long, 2 mm wide, with 1 vein. Flowers small, axillary; with 1 bract and 2 bracteoles; perianth campanulate, greenish white, 5-lobed, even 4-lobed; stamens as many as lobes, inserted on the inner surface of lobes and opposite to lobes; ovary inferior, stigma capitate. Nut globose, ca. 2 mm in diam., perianth persistent, reticulate. The flowering period is April. The fruiting period is May.
It grows in the fields, the edge of sandy land and grassland in mountainous areas. It is distributed in the north and south of China.

[clinical application] in the treatment of acute inflammation
Take the whole herb (dry product) of Thesium chinense and decoct it. In spring and summer, 0.5-2 Liang per day; in autumn, 2-3 Liang per day. More than 30 kinds of acute inflammation were treated, more than 200 cases, the average effective rate was about 90. Among them, 44 cases of acute mastitis were cured in 31 cases, markedly effective in 9 cases, improved in 2 cases and ineffective in 2 cases, with an average course of 4 days; 40 cases of lobar pneumonia were cured in 30 cases, markedly effective in 2 cases, improved in 1 case and ineffective in 7 cases, with an average course of 12 days; the temperature of cured cases returned to normal in 2.5 days, and the absorption of local inflammation in X-ray examination was 12.7 days; 14 cases of pulmonary abscess were cured in 7 cases, markedly effective in 1 case and improved in 1 case, 5 cases were invalid, the average temperature of cured cases returned to normal for 6 days, and the average absorption time of local inflammation by X-ray was 28 days.
