[plant morphology] Zanthoxylum heterophyllum

Shrubs or small trees, 2-6m high. Branches rough, only sparsely prickly. Leaflets 1-3, thin 3-5, leathery, broadly ovate to oblong, 4-12 cm long, 2-5 cm wide, apex short acuminate, sometimes concave, base narrowly cuneate, margin serrate or needled. Cymose panicles terminal or axillary, 2-6 cm long; flowers small, unisexual, monoecious; perianth 7-8, sometimes 2 pieces united, apex bifurcated, different in size; stamens 4-6, degenerate carpels spherical; stamens 4-5, carpels 2, separated. Capsule purplish red. Seeds globose, 4-5 mm in diameter, black, glossy.
