Perennial herbs, 10-25 cm high. The rhizome is slender, creeping, with nodes. Fibrous roots grow on the lower nodes, and scales and petioles remain on the upper nodes, which are fibrous and brown. The scales of current year are 2, enclosed at the base of stem, membranous, with purple spots. Stem erect, longitudinally sulcate, usually with dark purple spots below.
