Perennial evergreen herbs. Stem short, slightly woody. The leaves are tufted and long elliptic. They vary in size. The smaller ones are 15-25 cm long and 5-7 cm wide, while the larger ones are about 1 meter long and 20 cm wide. It is smooth, green, with yellowish white banded edges and purple brown spiny serrations. The flowers are yellow green, fleshy, and the perianth part is connate, with 6 lobes; the stamens are 6, inserted on the perianth tube, protruding, and the anthers are T-shaped; the ovary is 3-locular, the style is subulate, and the stigma is capitate, 3-lobed. Capsule oblong, intercellular dehiscence. Seeds numerous, flat, black. It blooms in summer. It usually takes about 10 years for it to blossom and wither after it bears fruit.

Most of them are planted in gardens. It is distributed in southwest and South China.

From the hydrolysates, some steroidal saponins were obtained, such as Haike saponin, 9-dehydroehaike saponin, green lotus saponin, mannogen, tigogen, guadesapogenin, loke saponin and 12 epiloke saponin. Neotigogenin, Haike saponin and karmogenin were separated from the seeds.
