It is a perennial, strong and clustered herb with thick roots, short stems and hard fibrous roots. Culm 30-150 cm high, nearly cylindrical, base covered with leafless sheath, sheath brown. Bracts 20, about 2 times longer than inflorescence, 2-11 mm wide, spreading. The first radiation branch is 7 cm long, the second radiation branch is 15 cm long; the spikelets are elliptic or oblong lanceolate, 3-8 mm long, compressed, with 6-26 flowers, scales closely imbricate arrangement, membranous, ovate, about 2 mm long, with 3-5 veins; stamens are 3, anthers are linear, apex with setiform appendages; styles are short, stigmas are 3. Nutlets elliptic, nearly triangular, 1 / 3 of scales long, brown. The heading stage is winter and spring.
It grows in forests, grasslands, lakes, marshes on the edge of rivers, or in pools. It is widely cultivated in China.
