[plant morphology] Ampelopsis trifida, also known as jade grape, maple vine, mountain grape, green grape, eardrop fruit, centipede vine and wild grape.

Liana. The stem is 0.7-1 cm thick, smooth, with fine stripes and round lenticels, and the tender branches are pilose. Tendrils opposite leaves. Leaves alternate, mostly 3-lobed. The middle leaflets are oblong to broadly ovate, apex acuminate, base cuneate or round, short petiole or sessile, lateral leaflets extremely oblique, obliquely ovate; a few are simple, 3-lobed, broadly ovate, 5-12 cm in length and width, apex acuminate, base heart-shaped, dark green above, smooth below, gray green below, veins covered with rust hairs. Cymes opposite leaves; flowers small, green; petals 5; stamens 5, filaments very short; disk cup-shaped, free from ovary, style slender. Berry dark blue, round to oblate; 2 seeds. The flowering period is May. The fruit period is from August to September.

It grows on roadside, forest and riverside in low mountain and hilly area, or cultivated. Distributed in Yunnan, Guizhou, Sichuan, Shaanxi and other places.

[medicinal material] the roots are cylindrical, with several to dozens of them growing on short rhizomes, 12-30 cm long and 0.5-1.5 cm thick. Cork thin, easy to fall off, dark brown outside, reddish brown inside, more longitudinal wrinkle. The radius of the bark is about twice that of the xylem. It is easy to break, the broken part has dust, the skin of the section is granular, and the wood is fibrous. It has a slight air, a fishy and astringent taste, and a rusty smell after a long time.
