Perennial twining herbs. Tubers usually small, globose and slightly fleshy. The appearance is yellowish brown, pale or grayish white, and the meat is white or yellow. Stem thick, cylindrical, slightly spiny, up to 30 meters long. Compound leaves alternate, long petiolate; leaflets 3, thin papery, short petiolate, glabrous or sparsely pilose below; central 1 elliptic or oblong, rarely obovate, up to 15 cm long, base obtuse or rounded, 5-veined; lateral leaves smaller, extremely oblique, base often 5-veined. Flowers small, unisexual, arranged in panicles; male inflorescence cylindrical, densely pilose, with about 40 flowers, bracts shorter than flowers, perianth 6-lobed, 2-whorled, outer whorl round, less than 1 mm long, inner whorl long and thick, stamen 6; female inflorescence flower sparse, female flower similar to male flower, ovary inferior, style 3, separated. Capsule shortly stipitate, pilose, 3-valved, 3-winged. Seeds winged. The flowering period is from April to May. The fruit period is from July to September.
