[source] it is the root or root bark of Caragana microphylla. The plant morphology is detailed in the section of "Canary".
[collection] it can be collected all year round (more in Sichuan than in late summer and early autumn). After digging, it can be used to clean the sediment, remove the fibrous roots and dark brown cork, and be used fresh or dried in the sun. Or cut off the wood core, cut the clean skin into sections and dry in the sun.
[herbal medicine] the root is cylindrical, brown when not embolized, with longitudinal wrinkles and sparse irregular protruding transverse lines. Those who had been embolized were mostly light yellow with transverse cracks. The root bark is a single roll of round strips or pieces, 12-20 cm long, 1-2.5 cm in diameter and 3-7 mm in thickness. There is a longitudinal crack on one side of the roll, and the inner surface is light brown. It is tough, white, yellowish, fleshy and has many fibers. It tastes bitter. It is better if the root bark is thick, yellowish and intact.
The root is from Zhejiang and Jiangsu, and the root bark is from Sichuan.
[chemical constituents] the root contains alkaloids, glycosides, saponins and starch.
[pharmacological action] intraperitoneal injection of 90 g crude drug / kg of alcohol extract can cause a sustained decrease of blood pressure in anesthetized cats. The ether extract also has antihypertensive effect.

[clinical application] treatment of hypertension
Take Caragana root to peel, slice and dry in the sun, 0.7-1 Liang per day, decoct in water, add sugar, take 2-3 times. 100 cases (blood pressure above 160 / 100 mmHg) were observed. The antihypertensive effect was as follows: stage II hypertension was markedly effective (according to the standard of 1964 National Conference on cardiovascular disease). 19 cases, 41 cases were effective, 18 cases were ineffective; 2 cases were markedly effective, 7 cases were effective, 8 cases were ineffective in stage III; 1 case was markedly effective, 1 case was effective in renal hypertension; 2 cases were effective and 1 case was ineffective in postpartum hypertension. The total effective rate was 73%. Blood pressure began to decline (diastolic blood pressure dropped more than 10 mmHg as the standard) time, about 75% of the cases within a week, a few began to decline after 3-4 weeks. Preliminary observation shows that this product has antihypertensive effect on various types of hypertension, especially for patients with stage II hypertension; sometimes it can also play a role that general western antihypertensive drugs can not. Although the blood pressure did not drop in a few cases, the symptoms decreased significantly. The antihypertensive effect of Caragana root was related to the dosage and duration of the drug. In some cases, the blood pressure began to drop after 1-2 weeks, and in some cases, the blood pressure began to drop after 2-4 weeks. It shows that increasing the dosage or prolonging the medication time can increase the antihypertensive effect. For patients with hypertension and myocardial damage, not only the blood pressure decreased, but also the damaged myocardium returned to normal. After treatment, the follow-up observation showed that 5% of the patients' blood pressure did not rise again after half a year of drug withdrawal, indicating that the antihypertensive effect was more consolidated. In practice, it was also observed that the combination of this product and ginkgo leaf extract had synergistic antihypertensive effect. The ratio of cholesterol to phospholipid was also improved, and the effect of combination with reserpine was better than that of single use of Caragana or reserpine. According to the observation of 64 cases, the total effective rate was 90%. In 60% cases, the blood pressure began to drop after 4-5 days. There were only 3 cases of pruritus, urticaria and allergic dermatitis, and 2 cases of cough.
