Perennial herbs. The taproot is thick and long, and the skin is dark brown. Stem 20-60 cm high, sparsely pubescent, often branched. The basal leaves have long petioles, 2-fold and 3-out compound leaves, the leaflets are obovate, fan-shaped or ovate, 3-lobed, the lobes have round teeth, glabrous on the top, sparsely pilose or glabrous on the bottom; the stem leaves are smaller. Inflorescence with 2-6 flowers; pedicel 6 cm long, pubescent; flower diameter 1.5-2.8 cm; sepals 5, dark purple, nearly horizontally expanded, ovate or elliptic, 1-1.4 cm long; petals of the same color as sepals, apex truncate, without spur; stamens many, medicine dark green, staminode lanceolate; carpels 4-5, ovary superior. Follicles 8-11 mm long, erect, hairy, dehiscent at maturity.
It grows on the edge of mountain forest with an altitude of 1800-3500 meters. It is distributed in Sichuan, Guizhou, Hubei, Shaanxi, Gansu and Qinghai.
