[plant morphology] Zanthoxylum bungeanum
Shrubs or small trees, up to 4 meters high. The branches are dark purple with opposite prickles. The base of the prickles on the old branches is corked and dark grayish brown. Leaflets 3-9, opposite, sessile or with very short petioles; leaflets lanceolate or elliptic lanceolate, sparse ovate, 5-9 cm long, apex pointed, base cuneate, margin crenulate, papery, glabrous on both sides, glabrous and sparsely glandular punctate on main veins, lateral veins inconspicuous. Cymose panicles axillary; flowers small, greenish green; perianth segments 6-8, triangular or subulate; stamens 6-8, connective apex with a glandular spot; pistil carpels 2-4, usually 1-2. Follicles 1-2-valved, sparse 3-valved, red, with prominent glandular spots on the surface and thin pericarp. Seeds black, glossy, 3-4 mm in diameter. The flowering period is from March to May. The fruit period is from June to August.
It grows in low mountains, sparse forests, shrubs and roadsides. It is distributed in the southeast and southwest of China.
