Vines, climbing other things with tendrils. The root is spindle or massive, dark brown red, and the root bark is corked and easy to peel off. Branchlets smooth, brown, longitudinally striated. They are alternate, palmately compound, petiolate; the leaflets are usually 5, palmately or pinnately divided again; the leaflets have short petioles or few petioles, and the final lobes are lanceolate, rudimentary rhombic, unequal in size, apex pointed, base cuneate, margin irregularly notched with coarse teeth, rachis and petiole winged; the leaves are dark green above and light green below, smooth and glabrous.
