It can be up to 30 cm in length. The mouth is yellowish brown and the edge of the mouth is greenish yellow. The iris is dark brown. The face is undeveloped and the ear process is absent. The coverts on the head, neck and wings are dark brown, densely covered with narrow brown white transverse spots, and those on the top of the head are thinner and denser; the eyebrows are white; the outer surface of some shoulder feathers and large coverts has large white spots. The flight feathers are dark brown, with triangular brown or even brownish white border spots on the outside, and horizontal spots of the same color on the inside; the wings are white. The tail is also dark brown with 6 distinct white transverse spots. The results show that the buccal, jaw, throat spots and the center of the lower abdomen are pure white; the lower tail covert is also pure white, but sometimes with brown stripes; the rest of the lower body is dark brown, covered with white and brown horizontal spots, but on both sides of the lower abdomen is white, with dark brown longitudinal lines; the armpit feather is pure white; the foot feather is also white. The toes are dark yellowish green and covered with spiny hard feathers; the claw color is darker.

It inhabits in plains or hills and is not afraid of light. It often flies in the daytime and becomes more active at night. Nest in a tree hole. It feeds on rodents, birds and insects. It is distributed in the south of the Yangtze River Basin.
