Deciduous trees, 8-16m high. Branches dark brown, scattered lenticels, glabrous or pubescent. Leaves ovate, ovate elliptic or obovate, thick papery, about 6-10 cm long and 1.5-3 cm wide, apex acute, base round or obtuse, glabrous or pubescent below main veins, margin sharply serrate, 1-3 teeth on both sides of leaf margin, 1 gland below each; petiole 5-12 mm long, glandular, glabrous; stipules linear, margin glandular teeth, not connected with petiole. Raceme, 8-12 cm long, with leaves under the rachis; flowers white, about 8 mm in diameter; calyx tube obconic, apex 5-lobed, lobes triangular, glabrous, persistent; petals 5, obovate; stamens numerous; pistil 1, style slightly longer or equal than stamens. Drupe ovoid, apically pointed, ca. 8 mm in diam., black. The flowering period is from April to May. The fruit period is from June to July.
It grows in the shady and wet place of the hillside sparse forest or forest edge, valley and stream.
[indications] for muscle and bone sprains: the roots of Acanthopanax glandularis, Radix Sophorae Flavescentis, and shantianmeng (Ampelopsis vinifera) are mashed with distiller's grains or yellow rice wine and applied to the affected area; five to six coins of dried fruit (or seven to eight coins of dried root) are fried in water, red sugar and yellow rice wine are washed, once in the morning and once in the evening on an empty stomach.
