[plant morphology] Castanopsis kawakamii, also known as Castanopsis hystrix, Castanopsis hystrix and lecui.
Evergreen trees, up to 20 meters high. Bark dark gray, irregularly dehiscent when old; branchlets with oval pores. Leaf leathery; oblong lanceolate, 7-12 cm long, 2.5-4 cm wide, apex acuminate, base often round, slightly oblique, upper half margin with sparse and sharp serrate, lateral veins about 10 pairs; petiole 1-2 cm long. The flowers are small, unisexual, monoecious; the male flowers are green and white, arranged in erect, branched spikes, clustered at the top of the branchlets; each female flower is hidden in an involucre, arranged in a short spike; the involucre diameter is about 2.5 cm, with antler like sharp spines on the outside, cracking when mature, and a nut inside. Nut subovate, ca. 12 mm, yellowish brown. It blooms in summer.
It grows on hillsides and valleys, often mixed with other trees. In addition to Yunnan and Western Sichuan, it is widely distributed in the south of the Yangtze River.
