Evergreen shrub with stem height of 1-3m. Leaves opposite, lanceolate or obovate, 8-20 cm long, apex long and acuminate, entire or dentate in front half, base cuneate, bright green above, yellow spotted, stipitate. Flowers unisexual, dioecious; terminal panicle, sparsely setose; pedicel short, bracteoles 2; calyx small, 4-toothed; petals 4, purplish, ovate to lanceolate, apex long and pointed, tweezers shaped; male flowers have stamens 4 and central disc of tetragonal shape, ovary degenerate, filaments short; female flowers have ovary inferior, 1-locular, ovule 1, style short and thick, with irregular stigma, without stigma stamen. Berry shaped drupe, red at maturity, elliptic, 2 cm long; seed apex with very fine embryo. It blooms in spring.
Often planted in the garden. It is distributed in Hubei, Sichuan, Yunnan, Guizhou, Fujian, Guangdong and Taiwan.
