[plant morphology] 1. Akebia, also known as shanmutong, tututong and huhuxu.
Evergreen climbing shrub, up to 5 m high. Stems reddish purple or yellowish brown, striped. Petiole 3-7.5cm long; leaflets leathery, ovate lanceolate or ovate oblong, 6-14cm long, 3-7cm wide, apex long pointed, base round or heart-shaped, entire, main veins 3-out, lateral veins reticulate, distinct. Panicle axillary, terminal, inflorescence each node has a pair of bracteoles, the base surrounded by rectangular scales; flower diameter about 3 cm; calyx 4, white, petaloid, oblong or obovate oblong, apex obtuse; petals absent; stamens many, about 5 mm long; pistils many, about 3 mm long, ovary and style have upward straight hair. Achene oblate ovoid, 3 mm long, Pinnate, persistent style 5 cm long.

Flowers 1-6 clusters, slender petiole; white flowers, 3-5cm in diameter; perianth 4, elliptic oblong, round head or protruding into a short pointed head, or slightly concave, under both sides of dense villi, middle hair sparse or few glabrous; stamens very dense, pollen sac yellow; pistils many, ovary ovate, style erect, filiform, long hair very dense, stigma short. Born in forest edge and half shade. It is distributed in Anhui, Hubei, Shaanxi, Sichuan, Guizhou, Yunnan and other places.

[medicinal materials] ① the dried stem of Akebia is a thin cylindrical shape, 30-60 cm long and 0.8-2 cm in diameter. The outer skin is reddish brown or grayish yellow, mostly tearing, easy to peel off from the xylem, with longitudinal stripes, swollen nodes, and traces of petiole and lateral branches falling off; the xylem is yellowish brown or yellowish white. The body is light and hard, not easy to break, the cross section is radial lobes, the arrangement of catheter holes is dense, and the medulla is obvious. Weak Qi, bitter taste.
