It is a biennial herb, sometimes cultivated as an annual herb. It is green, with stout roots and a short neck at the top. Its stem is erect, 30-40 cm high, with upper branches. The basal leaves are dense, thick and wrinkled, ovate to obovate, 10-20 cm long, blunt at the apex, with one or two pairs of indistinct lobes at the base; the petioles are white, 8-20 mm wide; the cauline leaves are round or oval, sessile and amplexicaul, entire. Racemes few, stout; flowers yellow, 6-10 mm long, shorter than pedicel; petals cruciform, with long claws; stamens 6, 4, 2 short; stigma capitate. Long horned fruit cylindrical, 2-4 cm long, with thick beak. Seeds globose, dark brown.
It is cultivated in East China.
