Herbs annual, up to 120 cm tall. Stem erect, upper part triangular. Leaves from stem base; linear, 15-100 cm long, 3-9 mm wide, apex acuminate. Bracts 3-8, leaflike, different in length, dense stem tip; panicles dense, long ovate compound spikes; panicle peduncle different in length; rachis slightly winged; scales arranged in two rows, oval or long ovate, apex not prominent, back with brown stripes; the bottom two flowers are not developed, the upper part is developed bisexual flowers, but the top 1-3 flowers do not grow late, usually mature Stamens 3; stigma 3-lobed. Nutlets oblong, about 1 mm long, grayish black when ripe. The flowering period is from August to September.

Born in swamp or wet soil area. It is distributed in Northeast China, North China, South to Shandong and Jiangsu.

[clinical application] treatment of chronic tracheitis

Take the whole herb and make it into tablets. Each tablet is 0.3 g, which is equivalent to 10 g of the original crude drug. 3-4 tablets each time, 3 times a day, 10 days as a course of treatment, can be taken several courses. 26 cases were treated, including 9 severe cases, 15 moderate cases and 2 mild cases. After 7 courses of treatment, 10 cases were controlled, 12 cases were markedly effective, 3 cases were improved and 1 case was invalid. It has good effect on cough and phlegm. After 2~4 days, mucinous sputum of most patients turned into thin sputum sputum. The sputum volume was reduced and the cough was relieved, but the curative effect of vomiting of purulent sputum was poor. After three courses of treatment, the number of white blood cells in sputum increased slightly. Except for the disappearance of Streptococcus A, the positive rates of pneumococci and influenza bacilli increased, indicating that the antibacterial effect of this drug is poor. During the course of taking medicine, there were no adverse side effects, and a few patients complained of dry mouth and pharynx without special treatment.
