Perennial creeping herbs. The roots are stout, obovate and spindle shaped. Stems climbing slender, glabrous, purplish, up to 1 m long. Leaves alternate on stem, small; on branches usually 2-4 pieces clustered, or opposite or nearly whorled, oblong lanceolate, lanceolate to elliptic, 3-10 cm long, 1.5-4 cm wide, apex pointed, base cuneate, entire, or slightly sparsely microwavy teeth, glabrous on both sides, grayish white below; short stalks. Flowers solitary or paired at the top of branches; calyx tube 5-lobed; lobes ovate lanceolate; corolla milky white outside, dark purple inside, bell shaped, light 5-lobed, apex retrovolved, reticulate veined; stamens 5, filaments several as long as anthers; ovary half inferior, style short, stigma 3-lobed. Capsule conic, with persistent calyx. The flowering period is from August to October.
It grows on the hillside, both sides of linlian River Valley and other wet places. Distributed in Northeast and Hebei, Shanxi, Shandong, Henan, Anhui, Jiangxi, Hubei, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Fujian, Guangxi and other places.

[medicinal materials] the dry roots are slightly spindle or conical in shape, with different sizes. They are generally 6-12 cm long and 1-3 cm in diameter, sometimes with branches. The upper part is thick, with numerous transverse wrinkles, and the lower part is slightly fine; there are longitudinal wrinkles and fine root marks. The appearance is grayish brown to earthy yellow, rough; the ones without embolus are grayish white or yellowish white. It is loose and light, easy to break, with white section and many cracks. It tastes bitter and slightly spicy.
