Deciduous small trees or shrubs, about 3-8 m high. The branches are reddish brown. The leaf blade is long ovate or obovate, 7-20 cm long, 4-9 cm wide, wider above the middle, apex acuminate, base round or slightly heart-shaped, entire, with short hairs on the top and fine hairs on the middle vein below, 5-7 pairs of lateral veins, veinlets conspicuous, reticulate; petiole 2-4 cm long, glabrous; stipules lanceolate, light red. Inflorescence cryptocephalous; flowers unisexual, florets numerous, inserted in fleshy receptacles; receptacles petiolate, usually solitary or paired in axils, globose or nearly pear shaped, ca. 15 mm in diameter, purplish red, covered with white short hairs or glabrous; bracts 4, not glabrescent; stamens pedunculate, perianth 4, stamens 2 or 3. Achenes are small. Huapeng, April. The ripening period of cryptocarps is from August to September.
It is distributed in Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Hunan, Fujian, Guangdong, Guangxi and Taiwan.
