[plant morphology] zoumatai, also known as zoumateng and Ardisia macrophylla.

Small evergreen shrubs. The rhizome was moniliform, enlarged and stout. The leaf blade is oblong or oblong lanceolate, 20-40 cm long, 13 cm wide, apex acuminate, base gradually narrowed into a short stalk. The edge is finely serrated and the bottom is red. Panicle terminal; Flowers Lavender; sepals 5-lobed, lobes nearly triangular; corolla 5-lobed, lobes ovate to broadly ovate, ca. 3 mm long; stamens inserted at the base of corolla tube; ovary superior, style linear, berry round, red at maturity, with slender stipe. The flowering period is from April to July. The fruit period is from October to December.

It is found in wet places such as forest, valley or stream. Distributed in Guangxi, Guangdong, Jiangxi, Fujian and other places.

[medicinal materials] the dried rhizome is cylindrical, often expanded and rosary, 1.5-4 cm in diameter, with grayish brown to dark purple surface, longitudinal furrows, and the skin is easy to peel off, about 2 mm thick. It is hard, with light purplish red skin, purple pits and white wood. The slice was cut obliquely into a long oval shape, about 2 mm thick. The skin was separated from the wood, and the ray of the wood was clear. Sometimes it is mixed into the section of stem base, with reddish purple pith in the center. It is better to be dry, rosary, purplish brown, wrinkled and chrysanthemum shaped.
