[plant morphology] kenaf stem of Hongbei mountain
Shrubs or small trees with hairy twigs. Leaves alternate, broad cordate or ovoid, 6-15 cm long, 4-10 cm wide, apex long acuminate. The base is light cordate or nearly truncated, with 3 basal veins, red glands and 2 linear appendages at the base, green above, glabrous below, light green and reddish below. Tender leaves purplish red with irregular serrate margin; petiole 7 cm long, shorter to upper part, turning red purple with age. Male inflorescence axillary, racemose, 7-10 cm long, bracts lanceolate, axillary 4-8 flowers, sepals 2-3, stamen 8; female inflorescence shorter, terminal, flowers dense, sepals 6-8, lanceolate, ovary ovate, style 3. Capsule globose, covered with grayish white hairs, 8-10 mm in diam. The flowering period is from March to June.
It grows in the bush of hillside and wasteland. It is distributed in the middle, Southeast and South China of China.

Mice taking oral root decoction 175 g / kg had a significant antitussive effect (ammonia spray). The expectorant effect is also significant (phenol red method in mice).

The root decoction had no effect on bronchodilation (isolated lung perfusion of guinea pig), but had obvious anti acetylcholine effect in isolated ileum of rabbit.

[clinical application] treatment of chronic tracheitis
Use 3 liang of fresh red back leaf root, fry it twice (about 3 hours each time), mix and concentrate the liquid into 30 ml, take 15 ml each time, twice a day, 10 days as a course of treatment. 115 cases were treated. After a course of treatment, 27 cases were controlled, 41 cases were markedly effective, and 25 cases were improved. The total effective rate was 80.9%. The curative effect of two courses of treatment can be improved.
