(Jiayou materia medica)

[synonym] lanxiangzi (famous prescription on the sea) and guangmingzi (new ginseng of Yinpian).

[source] it is the fruit of Ocimum basilicum. See "Basil" for plant morphology.

[collection] harvest in September, screen out the sediment impurities (not suitable for washing, but easy to conglutinate with water), and dry in the sun.

[medicinal materials] the dried nutlets are oval in shape, about 2 mm long, with fruit stalk marks at the base; the surface is gray brown to black, with slight luster, and fine spots can be seen under the magnifying microscope. Its cotyledons are thick, milky white and rich in oil. Weak Qi, light taste, smooth feeling in the mouth; soaking in water, after expansion, there is a layer of white mucus on the surface. It is better to have full grain and no sediment.

[chemical composition] the seed contains 8.70% ash, 16.40% protein, 16.86% fat, 28.14% fiber, 6.87% moisture and 23.03% carbohydrates.

The seed oil contained 3.3% palmitic acid, 6.4% stearic acid, 15.4% oleic acid, 56.3% linoleic acid and 18.5% linolenic acid.

The content of pentose 9.2%, hexose 70.3%, uronic acid 7.3%, free lipids 25.4% and conjugated lipids 10.3% in the fruit mucilage. D-galacturonic acid (6.1%), D-mannuronic acid (3.3%), D-glucose (25.0%), D-galactose (24.4%), D-mannose (10.0%), L-arabinose (12.4%), D-xylose (7.5%) and L-rhamnose (7.0%).

The main storage sugars in seeds are plantain, sucrose and non reducing oligosaccharides.
