Aquatic green algae, 10-50 cm in height, are fixed on the bottom sediment with bifurcated pseudoroots. The main stem is long and thin, with lateral branches on the nodes. There is a large cell in the center of the internodes of the main stem and lateral branches, and there is a layer of long and thin cells outside, which is called cortical cells, and the nodes are composed of many small cells. There are "leaves" distributed on the lateral branches, which are unicellular. In the process of reproduction, egg shaped oocysts are formed in the axillary of "leaf", under which there are spherical sperm sacs for sexual reproduction and vegetative reproduction.

It grows in fresh water, especially in calcareous and siliceous water, and flourishes in ponds with slime and slow flow. It is distributed in most areas of China.
