Plant morphology
Annual aquatic herbs. In addition to absorbing roots, there are assimilating roots, which contain chlorophyll and come from stem nodes with pinnate cleft. The stem is long and thin, and its length varies with the depth of water. The leaves are in rosette shape and rhomboid triangle, 2.5-4 cm long and 2-4.5 cm wide. The upper part of the edge is coarsely serrated, and the whole edge near the base is green. The upper part is glabrous, and the lower part is hairy when young. The petiole is 2.5-5 cm long, hairy or glabrous, and there is a spongy air chamber near the top. Flowers bisexual, solitary leaf axils; calyx tube short, hairy, lobes 4; stamens 4; ovary semiinferior, 2-locular, ovule 1 per locule, style subulate, stigma capitate, disk cristate. The fruit is a slightly flat inverted triangle with thorns at both ends. The distance between the two thorns is 3-4 cm. The calyx lobes on the ventral back fall off. One seed. The flowering period is from June to July and the fruiting period is from September to October.
Living in ponds and marshes. It is planted in many places.
There is also a kind of Wuling (compendium). The fruit has two horns, flat, and the apex is bent downward. The diameter between the two horns is 4-6 cm. It is cultivated in the south of the Yangtze River.
The stems (rhomboid stems), leaves (rhomboid leaves), fruit stalks (rhomboid pedicels), pericarps (rhomboid shells) and starches (water chestnut powder) made from pulp of the above plants are also used for medicine. Please refer to the special section for details.
