[plant morphology] Populus tomentosa
Deciduous trees, up to 20 m high. The bark is light purple brown, rough and irregularly cracked; the annual branches are light ochre brown, smooth and glabrous, the biennial branches are brown and slightly light; the lenticels are obvious, gray white. Leaves alternate, elliptic to obovate elliptic, apex acuminate or cuspidate, base cuneate, 6-12 cm long, 3.5-5 cm wide, margin acutely serrate, petiole grooved. The flowers are unisexual, monoecious, and the first leaves are open; the male flowers are catkins; the female flowers are spikes. Ears ovate, dark brown, about 2 cm long, 1-4 on stout stipes. Nutlets broadly elliptic to obovate, narrowly winged. It blooms in early spring. The fruit ripens in July.
It is found in valleys, rivers and hillsides. Distributed in Northeast, Shandong, Jiangsu, Guangdong and other places.
