[plant morphology] Amaranthus spinosa

Perennial erect herbs, 30 cm to 1 m high, many branched. The stem is sometimes red, the lower part is smooth, and the upper part is slightly hairy. Leaves alternate; ovate or rhomboid ovate, 4-10 cm long, 1-3 cm wide, narrower at both ends, entire or microwavy, midrib abaxially raised, apex spiny; petiole almost as long as leaf blade or slightly shorter; axillary spines 1 pair. Flowers unisexual, female flowers clustered in leaf axils, spherical; male flowers clustered into terminal erect or slightly drooping cylindrical spikes; flowers small, green or green white, spiny hairy, bracts about the same length as sepals; sepals 5; stamens 5. Utricles subovate, tectate. The flowering and fruiting period is from May to October.

Wild in wasteland or nursery. It is distributed in most parts of the country.

[clinical application] treatment of ulcer bleeding

Wash the amaranth and slice it into 1-200 kg fresh amaranth, add water for 3-4 hours. 18 cases were treated, 15 cases were cured (vomiting coffee liquid stopped, stool turned yellow, occult blood test negative), 2 cases were improved (stool turned brown, occult blood test weakly positive), 1 case was invalid. The hemostasis time of cured cases was 1 case in 3 days, 4 cases in 4-6 days and 10 cases in 7-13 days.
