Annual erect plants. Root like. The stem is 10-30 cm high, with long nodes and branches. Leaves opposite, lanceolate to narrowly lanceolate, 2-4.5 cm long, 0.3-0.9 cm wide, base cuneate, apex acuminate. Upper margin sparsely serrate, green above, grayish green below, with minute glandular dots, glabrous; almost sessile. Inflorescence pseudospike, terminal, 2.5-6 cm long; bracts membranous, with purple ciliary longitudinal veins, margin with spiny teeth, imbricate arrangement; flowers small, beige, opening to one side of inflorescence. The nutlets are very small and remain in the persistent calyx. The flowering period is from September to November.
