Perennial herbs, 1-2 m high, all covered with long hairs. Stem erect, cylindrical, upper part with scattered red stripes, base light brown or purple. Leaves opposite, sometimes upper leaves alternate, lanceolate or 3-lobed to 3-lobules, 7-16 cm long and 3-8 cm wide, apex acuminate, sometimes caudate, base broadly cuneate, leaf margin serrate, both sides covered with short hairs; petiole short. Inflorescence: capitate, arranged in corymbose; florets dense, purplish red; involucre hemispherical, bracts 2-row, several tubular flowers, bisexual, 5-toothed. Achenes 5-angled, with spiny trichomes.
Born in roadside, hillside grass. It is distributed in Yunnan and other places.
